<description>To a Friend Going Off to Shu

Everyone knows the Szechuan Road
is hard-going and full of surprises.
Mountains spring up in your face,
clouds swirl round your horse's head.

Heavy-scented boughs keep you ducking on
the plank-path,
floods and freshets swamp the walls of Shu.
But these ups and downs will be in plain view,
no need to consult a diviner before setting forth.
