]]>Peter, I understand your frustrations. When we were in Beijing the first couple days I was put off by what I thought was rudeness (in regards to behavior specifically in the subway.) The way people would push and shove, and even cut in line for tickets. The feeling passes, as I’m sure you already know. I got over by assuring myself that it wasn’t rude to them and I had to put myself in their shoes to see why they did it in the first place.
My good friend is Vietnamese and I used to spend a lot of time with his family, I loved learning about their culture, studying their behaviors etc.
One thing I learned that might help you is this.
Bargaining is a way to create and sustain relationships, which is all they have as far as advertising that ensure their business sustains.
So the more you bargain with them the better their understanding and relationships get with “foreigners” or anyone!
Also especially in the Vietnamese culture; Its a game, and the best way to play to is with smiles happy gestures and even jokes. (They don’t see it as ripping you off they see it as winning the game!)
Another aspect I would consider with the harshness to Westerners (Americans) is that you are in the North, history has not made us best friends with Northern Vietnam; I would assume and actually have heard that the South is more accepting and gracious of Americans. Who knows though!
Gan bei!
]]>Peter, I also have empathy with you about the money situation. It has happened to me in Europe. It did make me feel sick to my stomach because I felt violated by people taking advantage of me… I guess the feeling goes away… you have a good attitude so continue on with your travels. I have read stories of other bikers in Vietnam, they wrote about roads of sand and long, long climbs. They did finish their trip. You all stay together and have fun. Please make sure that Jim eats enough - I know that he is always trying to save money…. Thanks and much love and blessings and good will, Netzy
