Cambodia, Phnom Penh - With Peter's friend, Celina, and our new friend, Fr. Charlie, at their Maryknoll project working with the Cambodian deaf population. Not only teaching Cambodian sign language (based on culture not local spoken language) but also actually developing the Cambodian sign language itself with gifted deaf Cambodians are the main activities of this project. Their's is the only program for Cambodia's 250,000 deaf who are older than 16 and is much later in starting than other countries. Most of their students come with no prior schooling, having lived in isolation with their families who often have only a very basic form of home-made signs. Excellent work.
