Germany, Baden-Württemberg prov. - With Werner Winterscieid, a soccer coach and care taker of his village's older field, and friend Gerhard Ulrich. We biked in thinking we could picnic next to the field, and instead Werner re-opened the small shelter there and insisted that we eat inside. He not only trusted us with all the beverages inside while he ran a quick errand but gave us all a Radler (half beer half limonade, and appropriately a slang term for bicylist) when he returned. Peter got to use his German, and Werner turned out to be a generously kind and down to earth man, expressing regrets that so many Germans have become too individualistic to the point where they are not happy and don't greet passersby, causing deteriorating community life. Werner, it was a pleasure meeting you. THANKS for the shelter and the Radlers!
