8500km Beijing to Bangkok in 6 months
You may be wondering how far we have riden from Beijing to Bangkok. Now you know. =)
Of course we didn’t take the shortest path by any means, at times purposefully going longer to visit friends (i.e. Shanghai, Changsha, and Phnom Penh). But since visiting friends who have a deeper understanding of a city or a country is one of the best methods of travel, the extra kilometers were always well worth it.
March 16th 2008 marks our 6 month anniversary of starting our trip and the approximate mid point of our trip. This Sunday Jim, Drew, and I fly to Calcutta, India to begin the 3rd chapter of the Fueled By Rice story after wrapping up the 2nd chapter in South East Asia. We still hope to make it to Europe, God willing and if finances hold out against the battering of airplane tickets over countries that won’t allow us to bike through (i.e. Myanmar and Pakistan). We have been so blessed with encounters with wonderful people, safety, and a general smoothness of the trip. Thank you for your continued interest, support, and prayers as we enter what we expect to be the most dangerous road conditions to bike in - India.

Pete and crew, make sure that you all have insurance for safety. Please know that at anytime, all family and friends will welcome you all home, whenever you want…. there is a goal, but you all have learned so much, don’t compromise your safety just to reach a goal, you must share what you all have learned with others….. take care and be safe and smart… Netzhy

Hi Netzy,
I have insurance and I’m fairly certain everyone else does too.
Don’t worry, I don’t think any of us are hot headed on making it to Paris no matter what. If it doesn’t work out, I don’t think it’ll be a big deal. We’ll keep on pedaling as long as we’re interested…and so far, I’m still quite engaged by our expedition!
Thanks for your concern, welcome, and freaquent comments! =)

Oh…man…I don’t know what to say…
I was biking along that Drew’s favorite road in Beijing this afternoon and thinking of all of you.

Looking for a post about Drew’s bike being stolen and wondering what this portends for the rest of the trip. I too have some strong reservations about India and this next chapter. Perhaps we sound like spoil-sports or worried parents but I do not share the optimism you share here Peter.

Pete and boys, Thank you for your response. You all stick together and be safe….I think that India will be a great place to experience yoga - that is the heart and soul of it. Please spend some time in a center where they teach you yoga… I can research one for you - it will be worth the time and effort that you spend pursuing this activity… Take care of one another and be safe - and enjoy your trip. love and blessings to all of you. Jim’s mom- PS - Of course I have to tell all of you to do yoga because Jimmy just laughed at me when I suggested it last night to him over skype…..

Drew’s bike being stolen suggests the bike is probably the most likely- being-stolen possession and portends that FBRs should take good care of their bikes for the rest of the trip, no matter how long it will last. (Laughter) Sometimes reservations would seperate us from the truth. That doesn’t mean us FBR followers send them there as testers, but optimism does need wisdom and carefulness.
By the way, i agree with Netzy, don’t miss yoga in India!

Reservations would seperate us from the truth and optimism does need wisdom and carefulness, I back up Tracy about these two points. Fueled-by-ricers, I believe that you all know very well about your way!
Pues, buena suerte para India!

Did the bikes ever get returned? Or did the insurance ever get paid out?
