Our original route fled winter and chased spring. There should have been no need for warm clothes, so we all economised. Indeed, I’ve spent much of the trip wishing for cooler weather. However, just as we crossed the border between Germany and Austria, fall has caught us (even though it hasn’t officially begun).
We suddenly found ourselves wearing everything we had. Clouds suffocated the sun. The temperature dropped to about fifty or sixty degrees farenheit. Doesn’t sound too cold, but try spending a week outside in that weather and a good portion of it with a steady 18 km/h or so wind to give the air an added bite.
We paused at supermarkets and gas stations, clustering in the heated foyers to warm up. I once came into a bathroom to find Pete hopping about on one foot while trying to warm the other beneath the hand dryer.
Cold isn’t so bad, but cold with rain is a different story. Water provides evaporation: the same principle by which your freezer cools itself to ten degrees farenheit.

In Straubing we escaped the rain by camping under a bridge with piles of guana and road noise to lull us to sleep. We luxuriated in our dry fortunes and the fire Drew ingeniously provoked despite the dampness of the wood.
I finally broke down and bought pants. Cheap articles of other clothing also presented themselves after surprisingly little searching. As we stay in Regensburg we are slowly massing our resources to do battle with old man winter or his early scouts. We missed the last winter, so I am personally excited for the one on it’s way. Perhaps, though, it will be courteous to hold off just until we can pull safely into Minneapolis.

Hey you all, glad that you still have the boy scout with you to build those fires!!! We all enjoyed them even in the summer while in the mountains. I have some empathy with you and the cold - glad you all are braving it….. Jim - aren’t you wearing those great pink pants???? I bet you wish you had my sleeping pad now…. Shall I send stuff to Minnesota or Chicago for you all? Second hand wool pants may work….. Take care and can’t wait to see everyone…. Jo and Sever are coming too…. Will have a bomb in the freezer in Minnesota and in Montana - the pergala still awaits??? love, the mt. mom

Jim,
Lets see now…long beard and hair, living under a bridge, and not enough clothing to stay warm.
You guys need to get signs written on discarded pieces of cardboard that say “Will work for food,” to complete the picture.
You guys are welcome to stay here on the San Diego leg of your journey. I actually mean in the canyon behind my house. We could rig up a tarp to make it seem like you are under a bridge.
I am enjoying the pictures, blogs and music.
Hard to believe you will be blasting out of Paris in just a few weeks.

I do like the manner in which you have presented this specific situation plus it really does offer me personally some fodder for thought. However, because of what I have observed, I simply just trust when other opinions stack on that individuals keep on point and not start on a soap box involving some other news du jour. Still, thank you for this excellent piece and while I can not necessarily agree with it in totality, I regard the standpoint.

Throughout this great pattern of things you actually secure an A+ just for effort. Exactly where you misplaced me was first in all the particulars. As it is said, details make or break the argument..
